Hello again!!

A big hello again from me and Star! Apologies for our absence for a bit but we're in the midst of major electrical works on the overhead pylons which cross part of our field. For the past two months the electric board have been undergrounding the power supply to the house, which basically meant holes appearing everywhere, major mud and disruption. Now we are having scaffolding erected over the track before the line work commences next month. I have to say I'm very pleased with how Star has been handling all this. There's been lots of different people about, noise, large vehicles, piles of stuff appearing all over the place, and for a horse that used to be disrupted by any minor change in her environment she's not even batted an eyelid. In fact she's had the best winter she's ever had and seems happier, calmer and more confident than ever.

The big breakthrough we've had is that she's enjoying contact and cuddles now. I have reinforced this a lot over the winter as this was when I had the most problems touching her, dare I say she's starting to enjoy it just a little bit now!

We're just getting back into training and my plans over the next couple of months are:
-train a retrieve and get her to put a ball in her bucket
-work on a send away. I need to do this as she now sticks to me like glue, so I'm using a bottle as a target on a long stick to move her forward of me on her own
-train her to ring a ships bell. I don't know if this is a good idea as she might be ringing for field service whenever she wants!
-work on getting her to hold her feet up on her own and use a foot stand. Barefoot trimming takes a while longer and she can get a bit fidgety so I just need some duration in this kind of exercise.
-train her to trot alongside me without getting too excited.

So hopefully we'll be able to share our progress again providing the electric board keep the power connected!

  1. Yuck that electricity stuck sounds awful! I'm so happy Star is handling it well. What a good girl. :) I'm also glad she's enjoying cuddling now. The power of positive reinforcement!! I'm so glad you're back and I can't wait to hear more. Maybe this will be the motivation I need to get back to training Chrome after our extended break. I just wish I had my barn back for those rainy days. I hate standing in the field while they eat getting soaked. Oh well.

  2. Thanks! I was getting blogging withdrawl symptoms! ;)

I'm trying to look at the electric works as a training opportunity. When they construct the scaffolding over the track I'll have a ready made tunnel to train Star to go through which should be cool! :)

I am glad though I don't have to move her. Initially they wanted me to send her away, bring her back then send her away again in october when they do the other line. I was not happy because I was told last year it would be safe for her, plus I didn't want to put her back in livery. Yikes can you imagine I'd get eaten alive having a piano playing horse!! Thankfully she will be ok down in the sheep's bit during the day while they're working overhead her paddock.

I know what you mean about the weather although I'm trying not to moan after what you've had to deal with in the States.

  3. Nice to see she still likes to get close to the camera just to show off her moustache!

  4. It's alright. Go ahead and moan. :) Misery loves company right?

I'm glad Star got to stay home during the electrical work being done over her paddock. That would have been miserable having to board her (livery). I didn't even think of using the scaffolding as a training opportunity! Good idea! :D
