Apologies for not having blogged much of recent, various stuff called life always seems to get in the way. Star's had quite a busy time a week ago she had the dentist, this was postponed from before Christmas due to the snow. My dentist uses power tools to do the teeth so a few days beforehand I just spent a bit of time getting Star ready desensitising her to the noise using an electric power drill near her. She remembered it from last time and was targeting it in no time at all. The first thing the dentist said when he got out of his car was how happy Star was looking, the second thing he said was how long her mane was getting! Star was brilliant having her teeth done, the good thing about my dentist is he gives her plenty of rest breaks without the gag so she can just get herself comfortable. It's really nice that he's seen an improvement in her behaviour each time he visits as well. So teeth are all done out of the way now.
Then at the weekend she had her second barefoot trim. Good news here as well, her foot structure is improving now the flare is being properly addressed, so the white line is starting to tighten up. This is great because the last thing you want is a stretched white line which can allow invasion of various organisms into the hoof. The trimmers recommended each time I pick Star's hooves out I just go around the edges lightly with a sanding block. I've noticed her hooves have been in much better shape since the first trim, and this is despite having the worst conditions going from very hard frozen ground to a muddy bog. Hopefully when the weather picks up we'll be able to start going out down the track again which will condition her hooves over a different surface. Other than that we've just been mooching about!
Awesome!! I'm glad to hear everything is going well with Star. :) I really need to have Chrome's teeth done, but I just can't afford it right now with my husband injured. I am looking into a second job for myself, so maybe soon. He's getting his next trim on Monday the fourteenth. I wish she could do it sooner, but oh well. He's also a little off on his club foot. :( Is your weather improving at all? I hope you're staying warm.
ReplyDeleteWeather's not been too bad, at least it's warmer although we could do with less mud!! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm so excited! Check out Chrome's blog http://rdxhorses.blogspot.com I just started working on smile today purely by accident and he's doing so well! I hope you and Star are doing well. I've been worried about you.
ReplyDeleteThat's fantastic although be warned it could become a favourite behaviour and you have a horse smiling over the fence each time they see you, I think it's cute though! :)
ReplyDeleteIt is pretty cute. :)
ReplyDeleteI'll keep using the target to get duration. It does seem to help him focus.
Don't stress about the painting. I understand being busy and it's not like there's a deadline. It'll get here when it gets here. :D
I have missed your blogs. Hope all is well.
